Without this help we would have been unable to find our ancestors, and much less understand their lives or those of their communities.

Where was my ancestor Thomas Lacey Lawson born?

One researcher in the family believes his parents died when he was young and he was raised by his 2 maiden aunts in Liverpool, but he wasnt legally adopted by them. He took to a sea faring life and was away when his aunts both died leaving him a considerable fortune in the name they had given him. Thomas Lawson Lacey. He had no papers with this name, and was unable to prove he was the one and the same person. Thus the money still to this day remains in Chancery. We have hints that he may have been a Whaler, and even one of the first to visit Adelaide before it became a port, but this is conjecture. It is said that Thomas ran away to sea in about 1816. We know he was supposed to have been a Whaler when he arrived at New Zealand and met Catherine Constant (Constance) and discovered she had been widowed en route from England. This is quite possible, as sealers and whalers were living on Kangaroo Island at that time, and ships called there to collect skins etc. These ships may also have called to New Zealand for the same reason. On Thomas's marriage certificate, in fact his name is listed as Thomas Lawson Lacey. They were married in New Zealand on 27th May, 1842 at St Johns, Auckland. Of course he married the widow Catherine Constance-Smith. Catherine had 7 children, and she came to a sad ending by drowning herself in the North Parra river. She tried to hang herself unsucessfully and then drowned herself. One son had heard a loud noise in the night, and found his mother distraught with a rope around her neck. She had tried to hang herself and when that didnt work, she told her son to go back to bed, and next morning they found her drowned. But what we really want to know is where they came from to begin with. I am interested in the beginings. Captain Thomas Lacey Lawsons life in Ireland...and where exactly did he come from. Who were his parents? And the life of Catherine Constant. Daughter of Joseph Constant and Mary Ann Howard. Where did they came from to begin with. I am interested in the beginings. Catherines first marriage was to George Smith (Smyth) at St Andrews Parish church, Rugby, Warwickshire, England on 4th July, 1838. And George died en route to New Zealand on 22nd Jan, 1842. He was buried at sea. The ships name was Mary Ann with the captain being Thomas Bolton. Died at Lat 42.30 S Long 165 52 E. From ships records. If anyone can help with some ancestor info, or if you need to know more of the descendants, please dont hesitate to contact me.
